"To increase the availability of locally adapted native seeds to conserve and enhance ecological diversity of the greater Los Angeles area."
our goal
to collect, process, store and provide locally sourced native seed to ensure sustainable, well-adapted and habitat-supporting landscapes.
Seed LA is a collaboration of representatives from several Los Angeles based organizations whose purpose is to enhance ecosystem resilience in the Los Angeles region by providing a reliable source of regionally suitable and adaptable native seed for use in habitat enhancement projects.
Seed LA values the importance of increasing public understanding of the value of native plant communities, and mobilizing public support for use of local native seed for habitat enhancement throughout LA.
our story
Seed LA emerged from a progression of previous efforts focused on native seed banking as a critical first step for ecosystem restoration in the Los Angeles region. This five-year effort known as the Native Seed Resources Coalition (NSRC) laid the foundation for the regional and diverse partner collaboration that now identifies as Seed LA.
2016 – Representatives from several environmental organizations previously involved with NSRC began to meet with facilitation support from the Urban Waters Federal Partnership Program to revisit the potential for establishment of a native seed bank that would operate as a collaborative in the Los Angeles region.
2017 – The group received assistance from the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) Program of the National Park Service to develop a Strategic Plan to conduct SEED LA’s strategic planning effort with help from the Urban Waters Program facilitator.
2019 – SEED LA received a Conze Grant from the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) South Coast Chapter to hire a Coordinator to further our efforts.
